The genesis of establishment of Kanpur Boat Club is very interesting, since British period, Kanpur was major industrial centre of northern India because of the easy transportation through Ganga. Thus, the Ganga has been the most significant factor behind Kanpur’s industrialization.
Unfortunately, during the decade of 70’s Ganga left the banks of Kanpur & shifted to Unnao and ahead of Sarsaiya Ghat Kanpur, it takes curve and again turns towards right bank of Kanpur city. Due to this diversion, water crisis was arose in Kanpur, hence the idea was conceived to built Ganga Barrage but unfortunately the project got tangible in the decade of 90’s when Urban Development Dept. funded “Ganga Barrage Project” was constructed by Irrigation Dept. In the year 2005, finally Ganga was back to right banks of Kanpur.
As it’s flow back to Kanpur, immense possibilities of tourism & river side activities started appearing in this area and in this sequence, the idea of Boat Club & Water Sports Centre was conceived by Sri Aditya Mishra, IPS & Sri Neeraj Srivastava in the year 2006 and for demo a state laver water sports championship was organized in the downstream of Ganga Barrage. After this in the Year 2007, the project was approved by Sri Deepak Kumar, then Vice Chairman, KDA.
In the decade of 70s, the flow of the River Ganga diverted towards Unnaoresultant the right bank of Kanpur became waterless and the development of Kanpur came to a halt. In the year 2005, after the construction of Ganga Barrage river Ganga started flowing again on the right urban coast of Kanpur city after about 36 years so the urban banks of the Ganga and the Ghats became full of water and a pleasant atmosphere established all around. The return of the flow of the Ganga has left a large area of land vacant, where the possibilities of thrilling river tourism and big development plans began to appear.
